Modern digital society relies – and will increasingly do – on the collection, sharing and analysis of large amounts of data, bringing clear advantages for individuals and businesses, as well as benefits for research and society as a whole. A fully-fledged data-driven digital society can only be achieved if there is confidence in the security and privacy of data, and therefore if solutions are made available to ensure that data is properly protected and used. Data protection laws and regulations require restrictions that limit the use of data, and both individuals and businesses demand that data protection requirements are met and that their data is effectively protected. Research area 10 meets this need by ensuring that the different players involved in data sharing have access to the tools and frameworks required to manage their data, thereby supporting selective and secure data sharing whilst ensuring functionality, efficiency and scalability. The data protection solutions developed under RA 10 will enable and encourage new application scenarios and introduce new opportunities for data sharing, in a controlled manner while complying with privacy and access restrictions, ensuring the integrity of the data and the results of the analyses. RA 10 will significantly help to implement a fully-fledged digital sovereignty.
