This research area aims at developing innovative solutions to recognise and manage threats to the information system arising from fake news and its dissemination. Acting on people’s cognitive biases, these malicious actions erode public trust in the media and institutions. The project will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on the automated analysis of freely available news, recent advances in artificial intelligence, and expertise in political science and geopolitics. Firstly, the project aims at checking the accuracy of news content and the reliability of sources. The goal is to implement methods for analysing textual and multimedia content in order to develop models that can be used to identify attempts at disinformation. Furthermore, an analysis of social media communities will highlight participants’ cognitive vulnerabilities and the threats associated with the spread of fake news. The aim is to design an early warning system to alert users to false information, by analysing the syntactic integrity of content and patterns associated with disinformation flows. The resulting framework will aim to raise awareness of the risks associated with sharing controversial content. Plus, the framework will support security experts and managers in their decision-making by adopting a human-in-the-loop approach.
