Research area 3 aims at analysing emerging attack methodologies and developing advanced methods for detecting attacks, as well as to identify guidelines for the design of IT systems that ensure reduced vulnerability to new categories of attack. The specific objectives can be divided into four broad categories: (i) Development of advanced tools for analysing malware and software, with a view to detect vulnerabilities that could be used by the malware itself; (ii) Development of tools to analyse network traffic and identify communications relating to pending attacks; (iii) Development of machine learning systems that are resilient to attacks and through which knowledge can be extracted to create more advanced tools for the timely analysis and early detection of attacks; (iv) Analysis of the ‘human factors’ involved in an attack, with the development of tools for analysing and correlating information from OSINT (open-source intelligence) and for the defence against and prevention of attacks based on social engineering techniques.
