Operating systems (OS) and virtualisation technologies (VT) are key enablers for existing and emerging computing and communication paradigms, namely cloud, fog, edge computing and 5G/6G. By leveraging the basic security mechanisms provided by the hardware, operating systems and virtualisation technologies offer essential security mechanisms and services (such as basic identity management and access control) upon which the security of applications – and of cyberspace – is based. Research area 4 deals with developing high-level automatic security systems and innovative security assessment and assurance methodologies to support secure-by-design development and the verification of cloud, edge and 5G applications. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques will be assessed through stress tests conducted in simulated but highly realistic attack scenarios, carried out securely within a federated CyberRanges platform.
