Research area 8 aims at improving cyber resilience of future systems and services, featuring increasingly interconnected and inherently vulnerable digital components, as required by the EU through NIS and NIS2, as well as by the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) To this end, it proposes a holistic, risk-based approach to cybersecurity that must also encompass resilience, privacy and the security of organisations, industries, critical infrastructure and their supply chains. This research area requires interdisciplinary expertise capable of addressing both scientific and technological challenges and legal and political challenges through new models for the continuous assessment of threats and vulnerabilities, as well as through the design of self-defending network components. Research area 8 aims at promoting the idea that a digitally advanced Europe requires the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, the promotion of social awareness and widespread digital literacy, as well as the achievement of gender balance in cybersecurity.
